On Saturday 9th of August the Finish Wild The Parks stop went down in Helsinki at the small but really fun Ponke’s Skatepark. This is the middle of summer in Northern Europe and we were “lucky” with the weather, even if you couldn’t survive the cold with only a tee shirt, cause it was pouring rain the days before the contest and the clouds were still menacing.

“Lucky” with the weather!

After a quick set up, the 3 spots were designated and consisted of a manual pad with a metal bench at the end for extra combos, a bank to bank gap, and a bank to picnic table… This skatepark has got several little obstacles street oriented and is really fun to skate even if there is no “big” things …whether you are 5 or 55 years old.

Around 60 skaters filled the “15 and under” division and half of them were shredding from early in the morning…give them a t-shirt and some redbull at the registration and they keep on going until dark. They went first in the qualification heats while some traditional sausages were thrown on the barbecue… Most of the kids were really enthusiastic -even if they knew they wouldn’t make the final and there was a lot of motivation to do or even learn tricks…some little kids even already have their own fan club.

They were followed by the 16 and over division (around 35 skaters) hammering the 3 spots pretty hard. You can tell that hardflips, bs smiths and nollie 3-6 flips are quite in fashion this summer… (double flips are so last year…)

Hardflips are so fashion!

Finals went down and results were tights: Eemil Mäkelä was killing it on the manual pad + bench with some fs bluntslides and nice bs flips on the bank to bank and took 3rd place, Mikko Hassinen and Aku Lilja going big on the bank to bank gap (nice crails!!) taking respectively 4th and 5th place. Ville Vierikko found himself taking the second spot after some original and consistent tricks on the 3 obstacles (cannonballs on the bank to bank, flip nose wheelies and sweet bs smith on the picnic table…) and little Benjamin Gren took the win with plenty of technical tricks with a smooth style, good job!

Mikko Hassinen went big all day !

Then Norro took the best trick with a nollie 360 flip from a bank to another over a picnic table and Roope went home 50 euros richer and a new pair of sunnies getting the “hype of the day” prize powered by Electric skating all day like a madman, screaming some “perkele” and “vitu” here and there after every slam…

That was a good day of skateboarding even if you can expect higher temperatures during summer time and everyone went home with smiles. We would like to thank Electric, Red Bull, Jukka Metsäaho, Rauli Kangas, Mikko Tervonen, Tuomas Orispää, Henri Kunnas, Pate, Off Consult and off course everyone that came that day, see you soon!
